Women’s FIS Ski World Cup Rocks Aspen

photo 1The women’s Alpine Skiing World Cup kicked off on Aspen Mountain Thanksgiving weekend. Aspen/Snowmass snowmaking crews have been hard at work since early November getting the racecourse ready for the ladies on the 1A side of the mountain. Everyone was very thankful for the early November cold snap that brought snowflakes and kept the existing blown snow on the ground.

Aspen World Cup VIPFor the weekend, race enthusiasts and Thanksgiving visitors alike enjoyed the race festivities. While the 1A side of Ajax was not open to the public for free skiing, viewing of the race was allowed on the side of Slalom Hill. And, if you were extra lucky, you had passes to the VIP tent. According to Aspen Event Work’s, Aimee Boyle, “the VIP tent was set up by the finish line for the very first time this year”. Woody Creek Distillers was serving up Reserve Whiskey and craft Bloody Mary’s while Sentient Jet provided mimosas and Prosecco to spectators.

Now finally, onto the race results! In the Slalom event, Austria’s Nicole Hosp took first (her first World Cup win since 2008) while the US’s Mikaela Shiffrin finished in 5th. In the Giant Slalom event, Eva-Maria Brem from Austria took the gold and Shiffrin finished in 6th. All and all, Austria clenched the leader boards in this World Cup event. Next up for the female racers, Lake Louise, Canada!
